Episode 01: The Goal
Have you ever sat around wondering what you’ve done with your life? I have. It hasn’t been a bad life. I have a career, make decent money, house, and kids; the whole thing. However, I don’t enjoy my career. There’s nothing interesting about my day-to-day work life. I’m a paperwork guy, it’s lame. I used to be an IT guy. Now I’m an IT adjacent paperwork guy, an IT bureaumancer. I look at red-tape, find ways around it, or make up my own red-tape. No no no, that requires a signature. So, I figured it’s time to go back to IT. I asked around, how do I get out of paperwork (mostly)? I heard two options, Linux administration and Oracle Database Administration (DBA). I, personally, don’t like Oracle. It’s the company, I don’t know enough about the product to have an opinion. No, it isn’t that the company is evil… well, they might be… it’s that I buy IT stuff and Oracle is the second hardest for me to buy. So, Linux administration it is. Time to learn something new. Here’s the problem, I have trouble learning new things outside of work or school. I could go to school or get a CompTIA Linux+ certification. But, I don’t wanna. I wanna teach myself. So, here’s the goal: Teach myself Linux administration.
If I’m going to teach myself Linux, I need a plan. Some sort of structure with objectives and tasks. I figured I’d try documenting my learning process on the internet. Maybe I’d have better luck keeping the learning going if I’m putting my experience out there. It might help me feel as though I’m teaching something to someone else. I like teaching things; though, I’m not sure I’m particularly good at it, but I enjoy the process. So, let’s break down what I’ve looked up so far and what I’ll be working towards in the coming months.
Objective One: figure out the end goal
Objective Two: get the hardware ready
Objective Three: get the software on the hardware
Objective Four: figure out the next steps
…So, four objectives to figure out.
I guess that’s the end of the blogisode… I’ve never blogged… and I don’t post things online… so, this is all new to me.
